Making health inclusive: practical lessons from programmes and research

People with disabilities face significant barriers in accessing health care. And many people do not have access to the assistance technology they need.

This event, held to mark the International Day of Persons with Disabilities on 3 December 2021 and in line with the Universal Health Coverage Day’s theme Leave No One’s Health Behind, highlighted what works to make health interventions more inclusive.

It included:

  • Alicia Herbert, Director for Education, Gender and Equality, FCDO
  • Why inclusive health? led by London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine
  • Unlocking barriers to sexual and reproductive health and rights, featuring research from Florence Ndagire (Makerere University, Uganda) and Queen Seketi (University of Zambia), and interventions led by Humanity & Inclusion
  • Practical steps to make general health services more accessible to persons with disabilities: lessons from FCDO’s Disability Inclusive Development programme in Nigeria, led by Sightsavers
  • Assistive Technology: FCDO’s AT2030 programme is driving affordability, availability and country capacity, led by Clinton Health Access Initiative and Global Disability Innovation Hub
